Jimmy Buffett’s Land Shark Island Lager Review
September 15, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment
I had the opportunity to try Land Shark Lager yesterday, which is apparently affiliated with Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville” brand.
On the bottle, it says it’s “Original Island Lager” – and after you take one sip of it, you’ll understand why.
It’s a light lager that tastes similar to a combination between a Corona with lime and a Bud Light with a twist of orange.
It’s light, slightly sweet and flavorful! Absolutely delicious – you can almost hear the waves on the sand and smell that clean, ocean air. What a great beer to pack in a cooler and head down to the lake or enjoy pool-side.
This is one of my new favorite beers. I wonder how great it would be to cook with – hmmm…
Much thanks to our friend, Kent!

Woodchuck Pear Cider Review
July 29, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment
I had Woodchuck Pear Cider for the first time last night at the Fox & Hound Pub & Grille in Dallas, Texas.
My husband told me about it and we had it draft-style.
I mean WOW!!! That is one of the tastiest beverages I’ve ever had!
It’s alcoholic, yes, but is really not overbearing, and no, it doesn’t taste like beer at all, even though it’s draft.
Woodchuck is made in Vermont the “old-school” way – this was a down-home family business that took off because of it’s deliciousness!
Woodchuck, apparently, not only has pear cider available, but Amber, 802, Raspberry and Read more

How to Marinate Meat
July 16, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment
I am a marinating queen! I love flavor!
When I have a marinating steak, I love to experiment with flavors, but often falling back on my “trusty rusty” recipe I’ve used for ages.
* Tip: When marinating, you don’t need to be precise with your measurements. Just be sure you have enough marinade in the container to completely coat the meat.
Have a large Ziploc-type bag ready. Rinse steaks under cold water and place in bag. Add olive oil, some red wine or beer, 1/4-1/2 lemon squeezed and zested, bay leaf, freshly cracked black pepper, chopped onions, freshly minced garlic and chili flakes.
* Tip: I don’t use salt as this can make the meat tough when marinating. Sprinkle sea salt on steak when grilling, if desired.
Close the resealable bag and be sure to get Read more

The Difference Between Milk and Half & Half Cream
April 11, 2009 by Kimberly · 2 Comments
Question #1: Are there any differences between milk and half and half?
There is a huge difference between milk and 1/2 and 1/2.
The butterfat content in half & half is dramatically higher than that in milk. In half & half, it is 12.5%. In milk it is typically between 0-4% (0 being skim milk).
This makes a huge difference to taste and texture. Half & half is much thicker than milk and coats your tongue. It “tastes” thick and fatty. Milk does not coat nearly as well and tastes cleaner.
You could drink a glass of milk, but you may very well “feel” ill if you drank a glass of cream.
Question #2: Can half and half be used the same as milk?
However, on many occasions half & half is called for!
For example, to make an Read more

Great Substitute for Banana Extract
March 19, 2009 by Kimberly · 2 Comments
Cooking Tip:
If ever you try to search for banana extract in the stores, it’s not an easy product to find.
So, if you are in need of banana flavoring, without using mushed up bananas, and want it in liquid form, use banana liqueur…
It’s delicious! If you’re using it for baking, the alcohol will evaporate, leaving you with great flavoring.

What in the World is Icewine?
January 22, 2009 by Kimberly · 2 Comments
Although we always have champagne for New Year’s, we always have a bottle of icewine too with dessert.
In fact, we take every available opportunity to drink icewine, especially in the Niagara Region, that there is.
My birthday is in July, and guess what my drink of choice is…Icewine!
To tell you the truth, I have never met one that I didn’t love.
What is Icewine?
Icewine is when the vintner keeps the grapes on the vines until the weather dips below between -5°C – -20°C for at least 4-8 hrs. Now, that’s cold, and it has to be a “hard freeze”! This will often be in the middle of the night, when it dips down to be the coldest in temperature.
Why?

Jackson-Triggs Proprietors’ Reserve Sparkling Wine for New Year’s
December 30, 2008 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment
My husband was such a sweetheart yesterday morning.
Before I had even woken up, he had made his trip to the grocery store and purchased all of his necessities for making my mother and me a spectacular brunch meal.
He made us smoked salmon and chive omelets, but snazzed it up a few more notches with sparkling wine…
He brought home a really delicious sparkling wine, not champagne – as only sparkling wine from Champagne, France may be actually labelled “champagne” – everything else is sparkling wine.
It was a 2006 Jackson-Triggs Proprietors’ Reserve Sparkling Wine – Méthode Cuve Close from right here in our Niagara Region – one of the most amazing Read more

Flavored Ice Cubes for New Year’s Drinks
December 27, 2008 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment
One of my good Stumble Friends, Kilroy60, wrote a great blog post the other day about flavoring ice cubes for fantastic beverages.
I thought this would be a great time to feature this great idea right before your New Year’s Eve entertaining.
He explains how he loves to make ginger ale ice cubes for his Crown Royal on the rocks. What an amazing idea!
