Mincemeat Pie. Now, what is that really?
Does it have meat in it?
Well, yes & no. It’s not actually meat that is added, but suet – the fat cut from the meat – and added to the fruit that comprises mincemeat, with some lean beef.
When sugar, raisins, currants, citron, orange peel, lemon peel, lemon juice, apple cider, cloves, sour cherries, cherry juice, coriander, nuts, cinnamon & mace are added, it is cooked for a couple of hours and you have mincemeat.
When you taste this melange, it is sweet and oh-so delicious, especially as a pie filling or tart filling with whipped cream or crème fraîche. It makes a scrumptious dessert.
I especially enjoy mincemeat pie around the Holiday season. It just seems so much the better in the cold weather.
If you’ve never tried it, make a point of doing so this Winter.
This mixture is easy to make, and makes a lovely gift when you top a jar of homemade mincemeat with a bow, and a sprig of holly.
People enjoy receiving homemade food from scratch.
