There is deliciousness happening in the potato department below…
Mashed Potatoes:
Traditional mashed potatoes, which are in themselves one of the best parts of any Holiday dinner for me and with gravy, are always something I look forward to. So, first & foremost, here is my recipe for them:
Garlic Mashed Potatoes:
Garlic mashed potatoes are a rich & delicious alternative to regular mashed potatoes. The flavor is very tasty with gorgeous roasted garlic, which is easy to roast alongside your turkey in the same pan in its own pouch.
You don’t even really need any gravy with this tasty side dish, and it may just become your new favorite way to eat mashed potatoes.
Bacon Mashed Potatoes:
What goes better than potatoes & bacon? I don’t know…maybe sausage?! Both of these could go equally as well mixed in with mashed potatoes, and if you haven’t tried them this way, you’re really missing out.
Not only are these fabulous for the Holidays, but they are just as good made for enjoying while tailgating.
Dirty Mashed Potatoes:
Dirty mashed potatoes are also fabulous and I would not hesitate to substitute dirty mashed potatoes for regular mashed potatoes.
You will simply wash your potatoes, remove any ugly bits with a peeler, but leave the skins on, for the most part.
They can be made as rich or light as you wish, and a sprinkling of herbs would add very good flavor as well. Not only are they delicious, but they are higher in nutrients by retaining their skins. Fabulous!
Foie Gras Mashed Potatoes:
If you want to make your mashed potatoes super fancy, this is definitely the way to go.
Using seared foie gras mixed in with your potatoes is often something top chefs keep to themselves in the kitchens of restaurants around the world, and now you can bring this experience to your diners at home too. All you needed was the idea!
Whipped Potatoes:
Whipped potatoes are the next level of deliciousness when it comes to mashed potatoes. By whipping them, you get such a light, fluffy, cloud-like potato side dish that everyone will want more of.
- Tip: Whipping the potatoes is best done using a standing mixer, as you can attend to other things quickly while whipping, but a hand held mixer is fine to use as well.
Riced Potatoes:
Using a tool called a ricer, you can force the potatoes through it, something like how a garlic press would work, and it gives a very nice consistency that’s a bit different from completely mashing the potatoes.
Riced potatoes have the same basic flavor of regular white potatoes and any gravy is delicious with it. Made with heavy cream, they are rich and flavorful and a good alternative for mashed potatoes.
Sweet Potatoes:
A quick & easy substitute is using sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes. Not only do they embody the flavors of the season, but they are quite versatile in that they take Holiday spices on well, and can be used in different ways. Plus, sweet potatoes are some of the most nutrient dense foods out there.
Mashed Sweet Potatoes:
Mashed Sweet Potatoes, mixed with cream, salt and pepper would be more than delicious and complimentary to turkey any day of the week.
Another good thing about sweet mashed potatoes is the fact that they keep well in the refrigerator, and can be eaten for a few days after being made without altering the flavor.
Whipped Sweet Potatoes:
Again, the whipped up version of sweet potatoes is light & fluffy. Clouds of sweet potato deliciousness will grace your plate and is a fabulous surprise to those who are feasting with you.
You will use the same premise as whipping white potatoes, using a standing or hand-held mixer.
Half & Half Potatoes:
It is possible to mix sweet potatoes with regular white potatoes and it would give a very interesting taste. Butter would boost the flavors and the mixture would also do well with or without gravy.
Risotto:
A sage and mushroom risotto would make a very unique and delicious alternative to mashed potatoes. It would be rich with complex flavors that go very well with turkey and would be a celebratory alternative that would satisfy any diner.
