This is the first time I’ve seen Ontario Saskatoon Berries at Harvest Barn Country Markets!
It’s also the first time I have tasted these delicious, plump berries.
We have experimented with them in tarts, straight from the box and mom included some of them in her strawberry freezer jam, so far. We quite enjoy the taste.
Find out about this product on this webisode of What I Say About Food:
Saskatoon berries are named after the city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, but we do grow them here in Ontario, in the Western and North-Central United States, and in various other provinces and states.
The berries form in early summer and come to be a dark, purplish-blue color resembling a large, soft blueberry, with flavor quite similar to a blueberry. They have little seeds in them, and being dark blue, they are high in antioxidants and have high nutrient value.
The Saskatoon Berry bush or Amelanchier Alnifolia, is sometimes called the Pigeon berry, Pacific serviceberry, Western serviceberry, Alder-Leaf shadbush, Dwarf shadbush, Chuckley pear or Western juneberry. With all those names, I think it must be able to grow just about anywhere. I am glad to know that we are able to grow Saskatoon Berries here in Ontario, and I do hope you try these healthful berries.
To me, it is always a comfort to know that Harvest Barn Country Markets try, as much as possible, to bring in produce and other products from within a 100 mile radius of their two locations.
