The Satisfaction of Growing Your Own Fruit at Home

StrawberriesWe have a most beautiful and productive garden this year…

Aside from the cucumbers, tomatoes, beans, squash, pumpkin, peppers, lettuce and other amazing vegetables and herbs…

We have grapes, figs, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, kiwi, gooseberries, rhubarb, plums, apples…watermelon even!

Whenever I see berry plants for sale, I get excitement in my belly.

I just love berries. There’s nothing like going in your own backyard and foraging for your own luscious, plump raspberries or blueberries.

Before about 5 years ago, I had never had gooseberries before. My mother grew a bush at her house and wow, was I impressed. I felt like I had been missing out my entire life on this amazing berry.

I love growing currants…no one else likes them in our household, but man, I just dig them!

We’ve got these enormous blackberries, I’m not sure the variety, but they are plump, shiny and there are a lot of them.

The kiwi bush we have is one that can grow in climates that have winter. They are amazing. They don’t look like those furry kiwi you get from your market. They are smooth on the outside and green, but inside, they’re wonderful, juicy, green, and tasty. So very cool!

What’s the best part about growing your own fruit & vegetable gardens, is you have ultimate control on what goes into those foods you are producing. You are able to grow your own produce organically. That’s marvelous, and saves you heaps of money.

Plus, it gives you a serious sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. It forces you, even if you have a crazy busy schedule, to stop and pick the strawberries, so to speak.

Strawberry ParfaitsIt’s the freshest produce you’ll ever get! Perfect all by themselves or in a sweet summer treat, there is nothing more gorgeous.

You will see me cooking with a lot of our own produce during shows filmed this summer. That makes me smile!

Grab some of your very own berry plants, grape vines or fruit trees at your local nurseries or online at sites like Ison’s Nursery and Vineyard.

  1. What a great article about homegrowing fruit and vegetables! We grow the normal vegetables but i will venture into fruit next season. My mum also love gooseberries, so i will try and grow a bush. I don’t think we could manage kiwi over here in the UK (unless we stick it in a serious greenhouse) but the blackberries i totally agree with you on!
