Native American Natural Foods: Tanka Bars

TankaHave you heard of Native American Natural Foods? It’s a food company started by the Lakota Indians from their reservation in Kyle, South Dakota. The Tanka Bar is their best selling product.

Check out this great video that explains it all…

I love that their using their traditional Native American recipes and helping their community, and the rest of the world, overcome health problems such as obesity and diabetes…

I’d love to try a Tanka Bar – dried buffalo meat with cranberries…

  2. Yup- I love’em. The Tanka Bar is tasty and just feels good. I’ve been avoiding all the power and energy bars because they use soy, which has all sorts of problems with it.

The Tanka Bar just feels a whole lot more pure- like real food, which it is. And, as someone in a spiritual tradition that puts some emphasis on the sacredness of food and food preparation, I feel a lot of respect, admiration and appreciation for the intention Tanka Bar brings to the food.

    • Thanks for the awesome review, Mark! I still haven’t had a chance to try them, but will very soon!

I completely agree with you in that I admire them for their appreciation and respect they have for their food and preparation!

We need a change – natural food that tastes great! It’s really simple and I think Native American Natural Foods has that in mind! Kudos to them…

  3. Tanka is a delicious food. The best meat snack on the market hands down. Ive tried just about all the meat snacks out there and tanka has my vote 100%. I have eaten several bars and no two are exactly alike. With more cranberries in some bites and a little less in others makes for a great and fun treat. But the quality and flavor are deliciously consistent. The people who run Tanka are a good bunch and I enjoy talking to and working with them. Everyone should be trying these snacks.

    • @ Jason: Awesome comment, Jason! I simply cannot wait to try one of these bad boys.

I love the fact that you say not every bite is alike…it lends to being a natural food that’s made with great quality and not from a huge factory that’s got everything mish-mashed…

The Lakota tribe seems to be an awesome bunch of folks who are very industrious and creative, to say the least!

  4. I was turned on to Tanka Bars by my husband’s mom, who is a crazy hiking person. I love them for many reasons: one, they don’t have preservatives; two, they are low-fat/low-calorie (only 70 calories–I’m also a Weight Watcher) but they are still a satisfying snack because they’re high-protein; and three, because they benefit a great group of real people instead of some corporate food conglomerate. They also taste great! I keep them in my car, my purse, my emergency kit (I’m in L.A., so they’re perfect for our earthquake/evac bag), and our kitchen. I highly recommend them.

One more thing–I’ve always had to order my Tanka bars online and have them shipped to me because they aren’t widely available here yet, but the online service has always been fast and accurate. Way to go, Tanka!

    • @ Elizabeth: Wow, Elizabeth – it’s a great idea to have these Tanka Bars in your emergency kits! Yes, these bars would be satisfying with the high protein, great flavor and organic nature of the ingredients.

I must say, I’m so impressed with the compliments Tanka and Native American Natural Foods has been getting.

I love a great company with great customer service that provides good, quality products that are consistently delicious! No wonder the hosts on this video above were singing this Tribe’s praises from Kyle, South Dakota!

I have to say, “Way to go, Tanka!” too!

Elizabeth, thanks for such a great comment – feel free to come back anytime,

  5. I love the Tanka Bar!! I spend a great deal of time in the outdoors and I have them in my packs for a health snack. The leaness of the Buffalo meat and the sweet/tartness of the cranberry is a great combination. Plus it lacks all the ‘fillers’ that I try to stay away from.

    • @ Lesley: That’s what I’ve been hearing from everyone.

I can totally agree with you that this would be a really healthy snack, especially for people participating in outdoor recreational activities like hiking, fishing, camping and the like.

I also believe that this would be a perfect snack for athletes, especially those who are in endurance sports or many events like decathletes (my hubby is a decathlete)…He’s been eating natural, organic jerky during his practices and events…

Thanks so much for coming by and leaving such a thoughtful comment, Lesley!

  6. Wow,
I was so overjoyed to see Tanka Bar being featured and that we can
share our experiences with them! I live in Alaska and as avid hunters of Moose, Caribou, and Fisherman/Woman, we do a lot of our own natural jerky’s, So when Tanka Bar came along I had to try it!
IT’S just wonderful, nothing like it in the world, with the natural marriage of cranberry in it, it’s all the flavorings that the makers will ever need, I love it for the quality, quanity, and sheer sense of knowing that the creatures of this fine product are from my home clan which makes it more enjoyable to me because living in Alaska it makes me feel that much more closer to my Tribe members, ancestors, and cousins from the plains!

    Thanks Tanka Bar and Kimberly!!!

    • @ Jessica: That’s absolutely wonderful, Jessica…

Again, I’m really excited to try one of these Tanka Bars soon…It sounds to me like the cranberry would go fabulously with the buffalo.

Honestly, I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about them!

Also, you’re very welcome! I’m glad to feature the Tanka Bar.

  7. I just tried them for the 1st time last week. Very good flavor and low in calories.

It’s nice that something as simple as buying a snack can actually help a community like Pine Ridge. I wish them all the luck in the world!

  9. Again with the Technorait links – – Tanka bars – -“Tag Not Found”

    • Hi There…

Technorati only keeps tags on that have been blogged within the past 30 days – if someone else out there had blogged about Tanka bars, then it would have shown up.

I think it’s so they can keep their website clean and clear with relevant, popular tags.

  10. Energy bars, like all food, supply the body with physical energy, as measured in calories or joules. Energy drinks, by contrast, are intended to improve mental energy by stimulating the central nervous system, usually with moderate to large doses of caffeine.

    • Hi Emmett…

Well, this is less like an energy bar than you’d think. It has buffalo meat in it. Be sure to check them out here: http://TankaBar.com
