Roasted chestnuts have an earthy, sweet taste and combine well with cooked Brussel sprouts. The presentation is quite beautiful, as the Brussel sprouts are intermingled with these delicious tidbits of roasted chestnuts.

They also taste great, eaten with sweet fudge or fruit dishes. Chestnut pie would make a unique dessert, such as a chestnut and chocolate torte.

Savory dishes and dressings are delicious with the addition of chestnuts. You might try chestnut soup or including them in a stew.

Just plain chestnuts are fantastic, dipped in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon, dipped in clarified butter, or totally unadorned chestnuts are a great snack.

  • about 2 to 3 cups fresh chestnuts
  • a sprinkling of water

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Using a sharp knife, cut an X on the nuts on the rounded side, cutting through the skin, and arrange on a baking sheet, with flat side down.
  3. Spray a bit of water over the surface of the chestnuts on the baking sheet.
  4. Roast for about 1/2 hour.
  5. Elephant Tea Towel with Pom Poms - shop.cookingwithkimberly.comRemove chestnuts from oven, wrap them in a towel, and allow to steam in the towel for about half an hour to 40 min, while cooling to the touch.
  6. Peel chestnuts and use in your favorite recipe or eat them just as they are.
