How to Grill a Spritzer Pop Can Whole Chicken on the BBQ

Spritzer Pop Can Whole Chicken on the BBQ - CookingWithKimberly.comOne of my favorite ways to cook a whole chicken is to grill it on the BBQ.

That’s right! It’s also one of my very favorite tailgating recipes.

This particular “pop can” chicken recipe is actually a take on my Texas Tailgating Beer Can Chicken Recipe with some tweaked seasonings for a different version.

BBQing chicken like this is something I enjoy doing quite often.

Then, if you don’t eat the entire chicken, you also have awesome meat for subsequent sandwiches, which will no doubt be out of this world.

With a smokey, grilled flavor and moist, tender meat with crispy, golden chicken skin, this dish is sure to please even the most unhappy NFL fan.

Type: Chicken Recipe
Prep Time: 8 mins
Cook Time: ~ 1 – 1.5 hrs total
Yield: Serves 4

 Ingredients:

  • 1 whole chicken
  • 1/2 can gingerale
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 8 peppercorns
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp red chili flakes
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 tsp poultry seasoning
  • sprinkling of freshly cracked black pepper
  • sprinkling of sea salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions:

  1. Preheat BBQ Grill to approximately 375-400 degrees.
  2. Rinse whole, defrosted chicken under cold water, inside and out. Pat dry with paper towel.
  3. When skin is dried off, rub the skin with olive oil or butter and evenly coat.  If there is left over butter, cover inside of cavity.
  4. Evenly coat chicken with sea salt, freshly cracked black pepper, paprika, cayenne pepper and poultry seasoning.
  5. Open can of gingerale, and drink a few sips or pour a bit out in order to make room for some ingredients.
  6. Add these ingredients to the pop can: red wine, bay leaves, peppercorns, 3 cloves garlic sliced into 2, sea salt and chili flakes.
  7. In a small baking pan, place pop can in middle. Slide chicken onto the beer can so it is standing up.
  8. Put pan with chicken into the BBQ in the center and close lid. Turn BBQ down to medium low heat (~350-400).
  9. Chicken will take approximately 1-1.5 hrs to bake. Chicken must be at least 190 F to be done. Check it regularly to make sure it is not burning and flames aren’t out of control.
  10. * Tip:If flames are high and burning the chicken, take a spray bottle and spray the flames back with water. Check regularly if your bbq is prone to this.10. When chicken is completely done, allow to sit outside of bbq for at least 5 min to rest.

    11. Remove chicken off of beer can, slice and enjoy!
