AppleOne of the Culinary Questions I have received is “How do you Keep Apples from Turning Brown?”

Well, this goes for fresh apples being sliced or chopped. Once exposed to the air, they will start to turn brown without some assistance from yet another great food.

Watch the video below to find out:

After you core, slice and remove peel, if desired, from your apple, coat the flesh in 1/4-1/2 tsp lemon juice. This acid will keep the outside of the exposed flesh from oxidating in the air and turning brown.

Then, if you’re sending the sliced apples to school for your child, for instance, fit the pieces of the apple back together and wrap up with plastic wrap or a resealable bag. This will keep it in good shape.

Now, if your apple is not very sweet to begin with, then you may want to sprinkle some sugar, but then it will cause your apple to leach our some moisture and now you have a “wet” apple. Just add them together with some sweeter fruits and you’ll have a great fruit salad.
