Cooking: Did it Make Us Human?

Hunting & Gathering - Photo: Jim Learoyd - Kimberly-Edwards.comI just watched a most interesting BBC documentary called “Did Cooking Make Us Human?

This documentary had great information on food, how we used to eat it, and how we evolved due to us learning to use fire and cook our food.

Fire allowed us to become predator and not prey. As well, in turn, cooking the food with fire allowed us to get more nutrients out of our foods.

This allows our bodies to use less energy digesting raw materials, and allows us to concern ourselves with other things other than hunting & eating…

Animals don’t cook their food, and spend much of their day handling dietary requirements, either hunting, gathering, eating or digesting that food.

Watch this documentary here – it’s just under 1 hr.

One of the things I found most interesting: When sitting, our brain takes up 20% of our energy to fuel it, as opposed to apes at around 10%. Our brains are hungry! Professor Peter Wheeler of Liverpool John Moores University explains it’s like running a 20 watt light bulb 24/7.

Some Conclusions:

If we can duplicate the textural response of higher fat content foods and we can trick our brains into feeling more satisfied. Not only do we crave the higher fat content, but we feel rewarded in our brains when we achieve a meal of higher fat.

So, if you want to change your physique, it’s important to satisfy these nerve receptors in your brain, so that we feel full and we’re not thinking about food constantly.

It’s all fine and dandy to eat a raw diet, but we find it difficult to ingest enough calories. So, we must have a mixture of these foods into our diets to get healthy, unadulterated molecules of vitamins and nutrients that haven’t been denatured by the cooking process.

However, when we cook our food, we make the nutrients more readily available to assimilate into our bodies, and giving us more energy.

So, it’s important not to drink double cream, but to create a menagerie of foods in your day that tickle your taste buds, as well as satisfy your hungry brain.
