Kimberly’s Masala Chai Tea from Scratch

April 20, 2008 by Kimberly

kimberlysmasalachaitea.jpg I love Chai Tea and have recently gotten bored with the Starbucks blend, and no other Chai tea from the store in bags or loose-leaf has really excited me…So, I have finally tweaked my ideas until I found what it is that I like…Here it is…
~ Kimberly Edwards :)

.

Type: Beverage
Serve With: Peace N’ Quiet
Prep Time: 4 min
Cook Time: ~ 18 min
Yield: 2 cups (because you’ll either want to enjoy it with someone else, or have 2 for yourself…LOL)

Ingredients:

Instructions:
1. In a medium sauce pot, preferably with a spout (but not necessary), combine water, milk, cardamom pods, ginger, fennel seeds, cinnamon, peppercorns and salt, and heat on medium until mixture boils.

* Tip: Be careful not to let it boil too quickly, and be sure to pay attention, as milk mixtures can boil over easily and cause a huge mess.

* Tip: If milk is about to boil over or is boiling over, immediately remove from the heat for a few seconds to control it, turn down the heat slightly and try heating it again.

2. As soon as it is boiling, turn it down to medium-low heat for 15 more minutes.

* Tip: Be sure to stir occasionally to avoid it from sticking to the bottom or forming a thin film on top of the mixture.

3. Once the mixture has boiled down to approximately 2 cups, drop in tea bags and allow to steep on low heat for 3-5 minutes, depending upon how strong you like your tea.

4. Strain into cups and add honey to your liking.

5. Enjoy!!!

This is my favorite Chai tea combination, more appropriately called ‘Masala Chai Tea’.

I hope you enjoyed this tea recipe on Cooking With Kimberly! Until next time…

P.S. To me, the type of tea bags you use is extremely important to the flavor of the tea. When using black tea, I ONLY use PG Tips Tea bags…This is undeniably my very favorite brand, and I use nothing else. Check it out, or get some here too:

Chai is Hindi for tea. So you’re basically calling it “Kimberly’s Masala Tea Tea”

    LOL…Scott, I realize that…LOL…

The reason I named it this is because many readers may not even know that Chai is tea…

My other reason was because Starbucks calls their beverage a Chai Tea Latte…LOL…it’s my fave!

…thank you for the good info…
