How to Cook Terrific Mashed Turnip

Ever looked at those turnip or rutabaga in the grocery store and thought, “What in the world do I do with these?”

I absolutely love turnip! I even loved them as a kid. It’s one of my very favorite vegetables, and it is an essential dish for the Thanksgiving feast!

In fact, I always make extra for leftovers!

There are many ways to make turnip, but with these root vegetables, to me, Simple is Best!

Type: Side Dish Recipe
Serve With: Thanksgiving Dinner
Prep Time: ~ 10 min
Cook Time: ~ 40 min
Yield: ~ 8 people as a side dish at Thanksgiving

The ingredients & instructions are listed below the video for measurements & directions. Please enjoy the video below.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large turnip – ~ 8″ in diameter, or about 4 small apple-sized turnip
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • sea salt – to taste; turnip can take quite a bit of salt.
  • freshly cracked black pepper – to taset; turnip can take quite a bit of pepper.

Instructions:

  1. Peel turnip and cut into 1″ chunks.
  2. In a large sauce pot, boil chunks of turnip on medium-high heat for about 40 min, or until fork tender.
  3. Strain turnip and put back into pot.
  4. Mash turnip with butter, salt and pepper.
  5. Serve & Enjoy!

* Tip: You can make this the day before Thanksgiving to free up time on Thanksgiving day.
