Barrilitos Pineapple Soda Review

April 26, 2009 by Kimberly · 5 Comments

Art Poster Print - Pineapple - Artist: Claire Pavlik Purgus- Poster Size: 11 X 14When I was in Dallas in December last year, we often have a man that comes around with his wife’s amazing Mexican dishes to sell for breakfast or lunch.

Usually, he has 3 different kinds of homemade gorditas for us, but…

…This particular time, we got 1 dozen homemade tamales, which were the best I have ever eaten in my life by the way, and he always has really interesting drinks and sodas that we don’t find in stores.

This time, I opted for the Barrilitos brand pineapple soda, and I am so glad I did!

This soda, although Read more

Great Resource for Loose Leaf Teas in Niagara Falls

April 21, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment

I happened to notice an establishment on Lundy’s Lane today in Niagara Falls, Ontario that I hadn’t seen before.

Colorwheel Cups and Saucers - Set of Four - Colorwheel Cups and Saucers - Mixed Color Stoneware Cups and SaucersI usually go to Teaopia at the Pen Centre in St. Catharines, as many of you know from previous posts, but I’m so happy to find this place!

LM Teas was formerly known as Lodi Market.

I am a serious darjeeling tea freak, so I needed to get some and noticed they were open.

I went in and saw hundreds of fabulous loose leaf teas, including 3 fantastic darjeelings of which I got a bag of each!

Try the SOOM Estate Darjeeling – it’s really great!

* Tip: Don’t forget to slightly cool your water from the boiling point before steeping darjeeling, and leave it only 3 minutes as opposed to the typical 5 minutes for black tea.

Also, I got to try a sample of their new Milk Oolong – what a flavor – it almost has a hint of a taste like Read more

Ready for National Volunteer Week? The Barefoot Challenge

April 16, 2009 by Kimberly · 2 Comments

If you haven’t heard about this 12 year old boy, Bilaal Rajan, from Oakville, Ontario (near where I live), listen up…

National Volunteer Week is coming up April 19-25 and he is challenging you to go barefoot for 1 week. That’s right…It’s called the Barefoot Challenge!

Why?
…Because, as they say, “You never really know someone until you walk a mile in their shoes”…

Many children around the world are so impoverished that they don’t even have shoes to walk in. Check out this awesome, tell-tale video:

So, he came up with this idea to bring awareness to this fact by going barefoot – when anyone asks him why he’s going barefoot, he says something like “because many kids around the world don’t even have shoes to walk in”.

He’s even written a book available at Amazon! I haven’t read it, but he seems to be very intelligent and well informed!

Why am I talking about this on CookingWithKimberly.com?
…Because I believe the things you’re passionate about are your tools to making this world a better place – it’s your gift to give to people!

So, since you’re passionate about cooking, when was the last time you volunteered your cooking skills for a charity or fundraiser?

When was the last time you brought some baked goods or a huge casserole to a homeless shelter?

When did you last bring a pot of soup to a sick relative or friend?

When was the last time you donated to an organization that brings food to hungry people in 3rd world countries?

I encourage you to take the Barefoot Challenge, but also to challenge yourself, not just because it’s Volunteer Week, but because you need to share your gift with others and make this world a better place.

The Barefoot Challenge is gaining momentum all over the world in preparation for Volunteer Week, in such places as Australia, Afghanistan, Switzerland, Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania and Thailand.

Be sure to check it out and spread the word…

Take the Challenge!

The Difference Between Milk and Half & Half Cream

April 11, 2009 by Kimberly · 2 Comments

Question #1: Are there any differences between milk and half and half?
There is a huge difference between milk and 1/2 and 1/2.

The butterfat content in half & half is dramatically higher than that in milk. In half & half, it is 12.5%. In milk it is typically between 0-4% (0 being skim milk).

This makes a huge difference to taste and texture. Half & half is much thicker than milk and coats your tongue. It “tastes” thick and fatty. Milk does not coat nearly as well and tastes cleaner.

You could drink a glass of milk, but you may very well “feel” ill if you drank a glass of cream.

Question #2: Can half and half be used the same as milk?
However, on many occasions half & half is called for!

For example, to make an Read more

I Don’t Prefer to BBQ in the Snow! How to BBQ Now

April 7, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment

Today in Niagara Falls, Ontario, it’s 32 ºF and snowing.

Now, I will BBQ in the snow sometimes, but I REALLY don’t prefer to…

It’s simply too cold to babysit the food and enjoy a “cold one”…You really need a hot toddy or something to enjoy while you’re tending to the food.

It’s just not as enjoyable as 80 ºF right now, like for the people who own homes in Scottsdale, Arizona, for example…Plus, you’d be able to watch a few golfers at the course behind your home possibly! Or relaxing with a margarita by your pool…

arizonaproperty1

Here in Dallas, Texas our car reads 62 ºF…That’s warm enough for a BBQ as long as you get it done before that sun goes down or the shade covers your backyard.

However, my dream night would be in Arizona tonight, so that we could roast up a beer can chicken or some fantastic, juicy steaks! Mmm…

I need to get some help from a relocation specialist…LOL

Where would you rather be to make your meal tonight? Let me know by Commenting in the Comment Box Below.

The Coolest Foodie Return Address Labels

April 3, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment

Today, I was online creating return address labels from VistaPrint.com…

I love this place, it’s where I get all of our business cards from, so I thought I’d delve deeper and get some labels, as I’m in dire need of them…LOL

I was playing around with what I wanted and of course, since I’m a hopeless foodie, my labels reflect that.

I wanted to share the label I chose with you all, so you could get in on them too – Yes, I know, that’s not the right way to make the label, but it’s just to show you how cool it will be with my actual address on it!

Check it out:

cookingwithkimberly-returnaddresslabels-vista

They had 9 pages of food and beverage designs, or you could build your own – even upload your own design!

You can get 140 labels for £4.99 – that’s less than £0.05 per label! You can order a larger quantity for the same price… (Not sure how I got on the UK site…LOL…But I have a lot of UK readers, so it’s still helpful and a serious deal not to share with you!)

I really liked some of their darker colored designs, but I’m never fond of dark labels, so I picked something light colored that suited me.

You know me…It had to suit my style…LOL

That looks like a really delicious and healthy shrimp dish, that was easy and quick to prepare. It has a lot of color and it’s making me hungry right now!

Good thing it’s Friday! Hopefully, we’ll get a chance to splurge tonight…Maybe on something that looks like this food! :)

In my opinion, it’s important to take the small things in life, and if you can make them so they give you a little smile, that’s a fantastic way to brighten up your day with something small!

Put a bunch of small smiles together and you’ve got your recipe for a marvelous day!

The coolest thing about check-out was that they offer you your design with your information on it in business cards, notepads, pens, notecards (that I’m going to use for recipes!), thank you cards, stamps, and the list goes on!

Wow…they were all so neat, it was difficult to choose!
