My Favorite Australian Fruit

January 26, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment

What is My Favorite Australian Fruit?

Passion Fruit I Poster PrintThe dark purple passion fruit!

Before I lived in Australia, I had never seen the likes of a passion fruit, let alone tasted a freshly ripened one.

Honest to Goodness…it’s the most delicious fruit I’ve ever eaten!

Literally, we had so many of them, as there were passion fruit plants all around the backyard where I lived. I could just go outside and pick them right there!

It has to be dark and wrinkly to be completely ripe.

Then, you slice it in half, take a spoon and scoop our the golden insides and the fabulous seeds!

I could seriously bathe in this stuff! I love it!

Calamari – Australian Style

January 26, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment

What was my very favorite thing I ate when I was in Australia?

squidIf I was pinned down to have to answer this, I would say it was the calamari!

I’d never had calamari any differently than the breaded and fried version, as you would get at Olive Garden here in America.

They don’t make it like this in Aussieland, unless you go to a fish & chips shop…No, No, No!

Otherwise, they’ll skin the squid and take out it’s inner “bone”. Then, you can either leave it whole or slice it, as they do to deep fry them. Don’t forget that you can also eat the tentacles! Yum!

However, instead of deep frying it, they Read more

Looking for a Great Fruit Tea?

January 26, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment

blackcurrants-pdWe polished off a 50 gram bag of Black Currant tea from Teaopia this week!

It’s really delicious!

It has a base of hibiscus, apple pieces and rose-hip peels…Then, it has elderberries, black currant leaves and black currants, and vanilla.

Now, I love black currant, any currant for that matter (we grow them in our garden)…Many people find them bitter or say they taste sort of like soap or perfume…LOL…

However, there are so many more people out there that are in love with the black currant flavor!

Plus, it’s naturally Read more

What in the World is Icewine?

January 22, 2009 by Kimberly · 2 Comments

grapesAlthough we always have champagne for New Year’s, we always have a bottle of icewine too with dessert.

In fact, we take every available opportunity to drink icewine, especially in the Niagara Region, that there is.

My birthday is in July, and guess what my drink of choice is…Icewine!

To tell you the truth, I have never met one that I didn’t love.

What is Icewine?
Icewine is when the vintner keeps the grapes on the vines until the weather dips below between -5°C – -20°C for at least 4-8 hrs. Now, that’s cold, and it has to be a “hard freeze”! This will often be in the middle of the night, when it dips down to be the coldest in temperature.

Why?
They do this to Read more

Manuka Honey’s Not Just For Baking Anymore!

January 21, 2009 by Kimberly · 3 Comments

honeyI know many of us bake with Manuka honey, which comes from bees that harvest their pollen from Manuka bushes in New Zealand.

It has a richer, more floral and earthy aroma and flavor, which gives it a more specialized taste than “regular” honey you get in your grocery store, like Billy Bee brand, for instance.

I use it in my tea, on toast with peanut butter!

It’s great for cooking with on chicken or in sauces.

Manuka honey’s a very versatile food, but it’s not “just” for baking anymore!

Try honey in your cosmetics and beauty products. That’s right…

Honey is not only good for your insides, it’s good for your outsides too!

I’ve been doing a lot of looking around and I’ve been noticing, more and more, that Manuka Honey is being added to everything from skin cream, to face wash, shampoo & conditioners. Unbelievable!

honeybeeIt’s chocked full of essential amino acids and truly one of nature’s precious gifts, as it has helped people externally with many problems such as ulcers, wounds, scar healing, MRSA and internally with problems like stomach ulcers, gastritis, heartburn, IBS.

It’s found to be antibacterial! Why? Because it has a “slow release” hydrogen peroxide effect. In fact, Manuka honey is the only honey they test for such a thing called the UMF or “Unique Manuka Factor” that determines it’s antibacterial activity.

How Cell Phones Help You Cook

January 19, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment

motorolaq9mcellphoneI know you’re thinking…”What? How in the world can cell phones help me cook?

Think Back:
How many times have you or a member of the family “forgotten” something crucial to dinner or making lunches when they got home from the grocery store?

How many times have you said…Uhhh, I forgot the flour, or the sugar, or the milk, or the dish detergent?

I know I have, my hubby has, my mom has…Everyone I know has!

How to alleviate this? A simple cell phone! That’s right…

How many times have you tried to call your family member who’s grocery shopping to tell them not to forget this or that? Now, when they either don’t have a cell phone or forgot it, it’s IMPOSSIBLE, isn’t it?

How many times have you needed to call from the store to ask if you need chicken or bread, or something else for that matter? If you don’t have a cell phone, it’s IMPOSSIBLE, isn’t it?

What’s the Result? Frustration.

Frustration or lack of motivation are 2 huge reasons people dislike cooking at home. Either they don’t have the ingredients they need or they don’t want to put a lot of effort forth or time into it.

This leads to eating fast-food that is not as tasty, not as healthy and costs a lot more.

Be a Healthy Eater and get a Cell Phone! LOL…

samsungbeholdcellProblem: If you don’t have a cell phone yet, there’s obviously reasons. Most of the reasons are that you probably don’t want to compare cell phone plans. Plus, they are way to expensive, especially for more than 1 member of the household to have at one time.

Solution: Get free cell phones for the family. Get free verizon phones – or any other free phone for that matter. What? How do I do that?

There are a number of ways and places to get them…

In fact, you can get free Sprint phones on various websites. Yes, you will still have to pay for the plans, but you can often get cheaper plans per person if you sign up for a family plan.

You may be thinking that pre-paid is the best thing…I’m not sure about that because that’s what we have now. Even if you get free att cell phones, which are one of the more expensive ones, usually, pre-paid often costs you more in extra “fees” they’ll take off for better opportunities to a good rate. We spend a lot more now than if we got a contract. Since we’re moving soon, we’re holding off until we move to get on a contract.

Also, remember, there’s tons of phone applications out there to help you with to-do lists and grocery lists…For an example, remember my post: Don’t Forget the Milk – Awesome Organizing Tool

* There are also ways to get free Bluetooth headsets, which can be handy, if your family member is driving to or from the store…It’s safer and in many States or Provinces, they are absolutely required.

When you remember an item, simply add it online and they are notifiied of updates.

I know there are so many times, in fact 2 days ago, where I wasn’t sure if I added dish soap to the grocery list. Of course, when Kenney got home…no dish soap.

I could have gone online, added the necessary items, instead of Read more
