You Can Grow Gourmet Mushrooms at Home
December 7, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment
Yes, you can grow your very own gourmet mushrooms at home over and over again.
Mushroom patches can be started by logs already prepared or with kits you purchase.
I had compiled a list of products for my new friend, Lynn Ogryzlo – author of Niagara Cooks, and figured I’d share it with the rest of the world of food lovers out there that frequent my blog.
I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love mushrooms and try to figure out ways to incorporate them into dishes all the time. They’re so healthy for your immune system!
However, I find that my frequent shopping trips to the grocer can prove to be expensive when buying gourmet mushrooms.
These are marvelous gifts for food lovers, especially at Christmas, and you can keep growing mushrooms over and over again…
Here’s the list of 14 different Gourmet Mushrooms you can start growing in your home or outdoors, if preferred:
- One 9-10″ Shiitake Mushroom Log – $19.95
- Two Large 14-15″ Shiitake Mushroom Logs with Soaking Trays (w/ Cookbook) – $65.50 – great value
- Morel Mushroom Patch Kit – $29.95
- Enokitake Mushroom Kit - $24.00
- Oyster Mushroom Kit – $20.00
- Maitake Mushroom Patch Kit – $29.95
- Pioppino Mushroom Patch Kit – $27.00
- Nameko Mushroom Patch Kit – $24.00
- Reishi Mushroom Kit – $24.00 – considered a “super-food” – (Check out my post: Health Benefits of Reishi Mushrooms)
- Blue Oyster Mushroom Kit – $18.95
- Turkey Tail Mushroom Garden Patch – $28.00

Make It Like Mama Giveaway from Dr. Oetker’s Casa di Mama
October 8, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment
Could you really get cookin’ in your kitchen if only you had the right tools?
If that’s how you feel, you need to enter the Dr. Oetker Kitchen Makeover Contest from Dr. Oetker’s Casa di Mama and you could win a $20,000 Kitchen Makeover!
I would absolutely LOVE to win this contest because we’re buying a house that needs some fix up in the kitchen. A $20,000 makeover would make it the prettiest kitchen you’ve ever seen.
What could I do with $20,000 in our new kitchen?
Well, I’d knock out 2 walls so that it’s more open-concept and brighter. I’d put 2 larger windows on the outer wall, continue the marble floors throughout the kitchen that’s in the rest of the house, add a large island with pillars to the ceiling and add all brand new stainless steel appliances! I’d also like to fix up the pantry so it’s much more organized.
Even if you don’t win the grand prize, you still have a chance to win one of 8 Whirlpool appliances – a fridge/freezer, freestanding electric range, dishwasher or microwave…
…even if you don’t win that, 2,000 people will instantly win a Casa di Mama Pizza or a pizza cutter.
How do You Enter?
You’ll have to pick up a PIN from specially marked packages of Casa di Mama Pizza.
What’s the Catch?
This contest is only available to Canadians…sorry my fellow Americans.
Be sure to check it out if you’re interested before the contest ends January 4, 2010.
On their site, I also noticed a place to enter the “Savoury Moments” Newsletter for great tips, great savings and information on their new, exciting contests.

Moving? You Need Pizza!
October 5, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment

Why is that every time you are moving, you just HAVE to pick up a pizza? LOL…
Not only did we move this past week, but we also helped one of our friends move too…
Pizza was in both equations! LOL…
If you order pizza, and don’t make it at home, where do you like to order it from?
In Dallas, we love Mr. Jim’s Pizza, Pizza Hut or every now and again, Papa John’s because it’s about 1 block from where we lived.
However, when we make pizza at home, I prefer pita pizzas – not only are they Read more

Cooking in a Fixer-Upper Investment Property
September 6, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment
Real Estate Investors: When you’re in a fixer-upper investment property and staying at the home, it can be difficult to get a good, tasty meal prepared there – amongst all the mess and dealing with issues like the electricity waiting to be upgraded.
This can often feel like cooking when you’re camping.
So, if you don’t want to eat out at a restaurant or order fast food for every single meal and gain extra pounds while you’re at it, take heed and learn how to cook healthy meals in a bare bones kitchen.
When you go to the grocery store, you can’t buy fresh food in bulk. You are going to have to buy small portions of vegetables, fruit, dairy and meat, unless you have a refrigerator you can plug in or feel like maintaining a cooler with ice in it.
You will have to use all of the items completely that would otherwise need to be refrigerated.
So, only buy just enough for the meal, especially if you’re in a very hot climate, like Dallas in the summer.
Buy a small carton of milk for your tea or coffee in the morning, and also use it for your cereal, oatmeal, cream of wheat or in your scrambled eggs made on a single burner with a stainless steel frying pan.
We find that buying packs of 6 eggs is best for us. The two of us can polish off this many eggs for a breakfast before starting your rigorous work day fixing up that house!
For lunch, you’ll want to buy a Read more

How to Cook in a Fixer-Upper Investment Property
September 5, 2009 by Kimberly · Leave a Comment
Kenney and I have recently been staying at one of our investment properties while we’re fixing it up.
This predicament often leaves us a little short when it comes to storing food, as there’s no refrigerator, cooking food, as we can’t plug in the large appliances before completely ugrading the electricity, and also, limited food in the pantry, as we need to be able to pick up and go quickly once the property’s sold.
So, as we often are in this state, we have become extremely creative when it comes to cooking out of the cupboard. It’s almost like cooking when camping.
Yes, we have a small charcoal grill outside, but there’s only so many times you can cook on the grill in a week, even for simple health purposes.
So, we always have a single electric burner because it doesn’t require a lot of electricity and it’s easy to set up, take down and cook on.
The problem with these is that they often don’t Read more

Okay people…
You KNOW I had to see the movie, “Julie & Julia“, don’t you?
Well, my hubby, Jessica and I went to watch it last night in the theater!
It was absolutely delicious! I could relate to Julie Powell on so many levels with her cooking blog and working her way through Julia Child’s
Mastering the Art of French Cooking
as I have done over the years too.
I haven’t cooked all 524 recipes, mind you, but I have cooked quite a few.
There were so many mentions and references of Read more
