National Kraut Sandwich Week is here with these cabbage salad ‘wiches serving up serious taste bud enjoyment.
Numerous sandwiches can be paired with sauerkraut, or any kraut, to give them extra tang & substance.
This goes especially well with sausages, franks & meatballs.
Brisket & Apple Sandwich with Kraut:
A nice sandwich of leftover brisket on fresh French bread with a generous spoonful of kraut, and topped with a layer of thinly sliced apple, or spread with apple sauce, is very delicious.
Euro Reuben Sandwich with Sauerkraut:
A delicious Reuben sandwich is always a treat. Spread rye bread with softened butter. Layer with corned beef, then sauerkraut & Swiss cheese, and a dollop of Russian dressing.
Then, spread outside of the bread slices with more softened butter, and place on a cookie sheet. Bake until nicely browned. Serve with dill pickles or gherkins. That’s around the world in a sandwich!
Farmer’s Sausage & Kraut Sandwich on Pumpernickel:
On dark pumpernickel bread, spread some homemade mayonnaise. Layer with fried farmer’s sausage sliced lengthwise, then fried kraut, 2 thin slices of dill pickles & topped with another buttered slice of bread.
Can be served as is, warm or grilled quickly in the oven served hot. Yummy!
National Kraut Sandwich Week is so much more exciting now that I have a plan.
